Simmons Sharks - 50 Years of Title IX

Simmons University has a long history of empowering and advancing women. Title IX was enacted in 1972 and this monumental civil rights law prohibits sex-based discrimination at any educational institution that receives federal funding. Our current student athletes and many of our coaches are humbled as we remember that participation in sport was not always accessible for women. The thought of not being allowed to compete in a race or for a championship is unimaginable for many.  

The student athlete experience at Simmons is unique and special in so many ways. At a women-centered institution, all of the resources for athletics directly impact the advancement of our women’s teams. The student athletes at Simmons are also some of the greatest leaders and accomplished students in the classroom and among the community. Last year our Sharks earned a cumulative average GPA of 3.57.

While championships and statistics are certainly something to celebrate, the journey to get there must be recognized. The time and energy spent training and preparing for competition requires complete dedication and often sacrifice. The Sharks proudly compete at the NCAA Division III level where academics are the top priority. The support of faculty and staff that surrounds the student athletes are a vital component to their success.  

For the remainder of the calendar year, we are calling on alumni, friends and family to join us in the effort to take Simmons Athletics to new heights. We have come so far since 1972, but there is much work to be done. Join the Sharks today and make a difference in tomorrow.  

We thank you and all of the trailblazers that paved the way for today’s student athletes. Our Sharks are now on a mission to continue to open doors and smash ceilings for the youth who look up to them.
