Every Simmons Shark, past and present, shares the same competitive spirit and commitment to excellence. Our athletes meet challenges head on, working with their coaches to stay conditioned and prepared for their next opponent, whether that be in the pool, on a court, the river or the field. Every gift to Athletics empowers our students by helping them develop their skills, pursue their passions, and support their educational journey.
This year marks the 50th Anniversary of Division III. The NCAA members voted on Aug. 6, 1973, to reorganize into three separate divisions. DIII began with 240 member schools and conferences and today it is the NCAA's largest division, with 433 active schools and 44 voting conferences.
"The longevity and success of Division III is due to the commitment of our members and the student-athletes," said Louise McCleary, vice president of Division III. "Over five decades, Division III schools and conferences have remained focused on ensuring athletics are a critical component of a student-athlete's well-rounded college experience."
Division III student-athletes are fueled by passion. They strive to do their best on the field and in the classroom because they realize the value in athletics lies beyond a scoreboard. Student-athletes push themselves to achieve excellence and build upon their academic success with new challenges and life skills within an environment that fosters health and wellness. This milestone celebrates the enduring legacy of Division III and its commitment to a transformative collegiate experience for student-athletes.
